HINSON posted by Marion Mitchell on Thursday, June 18, 1998

My ancestor James HINSON received a land grant in Dobbs County in 1767.I am descended from his son Jesse (Jessie?) HINSON. Jesse was born in Dobbs County, either in 1777 or 1782. I would like to pin down the date, although I think the earlier one is more likely. He had two wives. We do not know the first wife's name or the wedding date. The second wife was named Delilah (last name unknown and wedding date unknown.) Because of the uncertainty over dates, there is no way of knowing for sure which woman was the mother of Jesse's eleven children. Any information would be appreciated.

BAKER, BENTLEY, SHEPHERD posted by Diane Bates on Thursday, June 18, 1998

We are trying to find our BAKER family. Info we have might lead to Dobbs Co.. We are looking for any info we can find on a John BAKER m Mary (?). We have a possible maiden name of BENTLEY, but this is very iffy. Our elusive ancestor is a James Walter BAKER m Elizabeth (?). The maiden name which we have found for her is SHEPHERD. Early family researchers of our family have listed James Walter's parents as John & Mary BAKER. One of the ladies working on finding out about this family, says that her grandfather told her that his Baker's came from Dobbs Co., - Loosing Swamp area. We show: Patent Book 11:25 Lord Granville to Thomas Baker 7 Feb 1754 180 a in Bertie Co. on the W side of Loosing Swamp, joining School House Branch, Stallins line, and both sides of Beaver Dam Swamp. Patent Book 17:42. Crown to John Baker 22 Feb 1764, 130 a in Dobbs on the N. side of Loosing Swamp, joining Col. Bright, his own corner, and McClendons Corner. Taxpayers: Dobbs Co. 1769: Baker: Abraham s/o John Sr., Elijah, John Sr., Rubin Dobbs Co. 1779: Baker: Elijah, John. Dobbs Co. 1780: Baker: Abraham, Elijah, John, Judia. This is about all of the info we have been able to locate re Bakers & Dobbs Co., NC. Family info lists children of John & Mary (?) Baker as: John Baker & Mary both born 1760 in North Carolina. Children: 1. Solomon Baker b 12-24-1786 m Jane Privett 2. William Baker 3. Martha Baker 4. Jenny Baker 5. James Walter Baker m Elizabeth (?Shepherd?) b ca 1778 PA/NC (per KY Census Reports) d after 1860 (Per KY Census Reports). Our family is descended from James Walter Baker & Elizabeth through their son, Henry Baker 1808-1877. Henry born Lee Co., VA. AND Henry's son, Elijah Willis Baker (1832-1907) born Virginia died Letcher Co., KY. If you have any info on the Baker's of Dobbs County, it would be of extreme interest to us. Thanking you in advance, DianeBates@worldnet.att.net

HERRING, HINES, LASSITER, TOTEVINE, TRAUTVINE, UZZELL posted by Rose Parks on Sunday, July 12, 1998

UZZELL, HINES, TOTEVINE/TRAUTVINE,LASSITER, HERRING Minter UZZELL has in his book that Thomas UZZELL Jr. married 2nd to Sarah HINES (widow of ____HERRING) about 1763. Sarah was the daughter of _____HINES and Jeste TRAUTVINE. Thomas and Sarah had Nancy and Susanna (twins) and Isham. Nancy was born 1764 and married Stephen LASSITER (my line) of present Lenoir Co. There were some HINES and TOTEVINE living near Isham UZZELL and Stephen LASSITER in 1790 census in close proximity to each other. His book gave no sources for any of this information, but I have several sources for Stephen LASSITER and Nancy UZZELL marriage. Can anyone help on other items?

HOOKER, LASSITER, LASSITERS posted by Rose Parks on Sunday, July 12, 1998

Looking for information on early LASSITERS of Dobbs. I have 5 D.A.R. applications for jacob LASSITER they give conflicting information. jacob born 1732-1778 married Sarah and buried on plantation in Greene Co. Shows children Jacob 1755, Silas 1757 Jesse 1759, Stephen 1761 and Sallie 1765. Also shows Nathan and Reuben. Nathan would have to be born by 1756 by land deed and Reuben probably 1770 by 1800 census. Jacob has two pay vouchers noted in Dobbs, one for militia service and the other for grain dated 1783. Can a dead man receive a voucher? Or is this his son. and if so, then did the father serve also? Another record shows this same Jacob md. Ann HOOKER and her fathers will in Bertie 1757 shows Ann LASSITER. There is also Jacob LASSITER on 1757 Bertie tax roll and another source gives Jacob as husband of Ann HOOKER. I am very confused. Can anyone help?
